The New Can-Am Outlander Electric: Is This the Future of ATVs?

Paul Wilde

A Glimpse Into the Future of ATVs?

When Can-Am announced its first fully electric Outlander, our initial reaction was probably the same as many of our customers.

“Who exactly is this for?”

After all, petrol-powered ATVs have earned their reputation through decades of hard work. They’re reliable, practical and capable of tackling everything from feeding livestock to towing trailers across muddy fields.

So why would anyone choose an electric ATV?

Now that the Can-Am Outlander Electric has arrived at Beckside Machinery, we think the answer is more interesting than you might expect.

Not Just an Electric ATV

The temptation is to compare the Outlander Electric directly with traditional petrol ATVs.

However, that isn’t really the point.

Can-Am hasn’t simply removed the engine and fitted a battery.

Instead, they’ve designed a machine that offers the same practicality and capability many riders expect from an Outlander, while introducing a completely different ownership experience.

The result is an ATV that’s quiet, smooth and surprisingly capable.

The Advantages of Going Electric

One of the first things people notice is the silence.

The Rotax E-Power system delivers 47hp (35kW) with almost no vibration and very little noise.

For some users, that’s a genuine advantage.

Imagine checking paddocks without disturbing horses.

Working around livestock with less noise.

Driving around a holiday park early in the morning.

Or simply enjoying the countryside without the constant soundtrack of an engine.

It changes the experience.

But Is It Still a Proper Can-Am?

This is probably the biggest question of all.

The answer appears to be yes.

The Outlander Electric still offers:

  • Selectable 2WD and 4WD
  • Visco-Lok QE front differential
  • High and low range gearing
  • Three riding modes: Work, Normal and Sport
  • Regenerative braking
  • Towing capability of up to 830kg
  • Genuine ATV capability

Can-Am claims up to 80km of range in ideal conditions, while a Level 2 charger can take the battery from 20% to 80% in around 50 minutes.

For the average smallholder or equestrian customer, that’s often more than enough for a day’s work.

Is It Right for Everyone?

Probably not.

If you’re spending all day covering huge distances, operating in remote locations without charging facilities or simply prefer the familiarity of petrol, a traditional Can-Am Outlander still makes perfect sense.

The electric model won’t replace every ATV overnight.

But that’s not really its job.

Instead, it offers a different solution.

One that’s quieter, requires less routine maintenance and feels remarkably refined.

No oil changes.

No spark plugs.

Fewer moving parts.

Less routine servicing.

So, Who Is It For?

The Can-Am Outlander Electric could be the perfect fit for:

  • Equestrian properties
  • Smallholders
  • Estate owners
  • Holiday parks
  • Campsites
  • Early adopters
  • Anyone wanting a quieter ATV experience

And perhaps most importantly, people who simply want to try something new.

The Future of ATVs?

It’s too early to say whether electric ATVs will eventually replace petrol models.

But we suspect that’s the wrong question.

The better question is this:

Will electric ATVs become another option alongside traditional machines?

Having spent some time looking at the new Outlander Electric, we think the answer is yes.

It won’t suit everybody.

But for the right customer, it could make perfect sense.

And if nothing else, it’s exciting to see genuine innovation arriving in the ATV world.
